Positive Holes are Everywhere

Solid Earth has a positively charged surface and a way of producing positively charged air ions at the surface – mostly at low concentrations but occasionally many orders of magnitude more, when tectonic stresses (a sign of a looming earthquake) activate positive electronic charge carries in the rocks deep in the Earth's crust. These positive charge carriers throng in large numbers to the Earth's surface and rip electrons off air molecules, thereby producing massive amounts of positive air ions.  These positive air ions in turn cause a variety of physical effects that are of importance to, for instance, the transmission of radio waves off the ionosphere, but they also cause physiological effects in animals and humans, mostly detrimental and of unpleasant nature
